How To Make The Most Out Of Orientation For Session 3

Summary:

”Turn on that camera during Zoom sessions, and engage with fellow students through the discussion boards. Meet up in person or virtually for a coffee/chat. Studying online doesn’t mean studying alone.” Charlie contributor Michelle Curry offers some advice on studying in Session 3.

As we gear up for Session 3, it’s time to get organised, informed, and excited for the upcoming session.

This article will guide you through some essential steps to prepare for your online learning journey, including saving important dates, registering for faculty orientation sessions, and highlighting the academic skills sessions, and the online game show where you can win exciting prizes.

Plus, I’ll share a few insights on how I’m personally preparing for Session 3.

Save Those Dates

First and foremost, let’s talk about the importance of noting important dates in your calendar.

I have a giant wall calendar where I note all of my important dates of when assessments are due, the exam period, and all the public holidays and shut-downs over the Christmas period.

Having these dates recorded and visible helps you stay on track and can save you from any last-minute stress.

Make sure to plan some time for yourself and family this festive season.

Faculty Orientation Sessions

Faculty orientation sessions are your gateway to success in your chosen degree.

These orientation sessions are designed to provide insights into your program’s specifics and expectations, and you will be able to meet some friendly faces who will be your key contacts throughout your degree.

Register for these sessions as soon as possible and don’t be afraid to ask any questions.

Academic Skills Sessions

One advantage of studying at Charles Sturt is the free support services available.

The Academic Skills team provides various workshops each month to enhance your study skills and help you succeed in your courses.

There is a heap of short presentations and workshops that will help you brush up on skills, and help you to organise your time.

I recommend the “orientation to online learning” workshop and the “kickstart to referencing”.

You can get ahead and start on these workshops now and access any time from the student portal.

Online Game Show

This Session 3, there is an exciting addition to orientation with the Online Game Show.

Step up and spin the wheel, flip over a square, and get ready to answer a question with a question.

Join the Orientation Team for hilarious challenges based on TV’s favourite game shows. All from the comfort of your own home.

There will be lots of prizes to be won! Spots are limited so you need to register ASAP and be ready to play on Thursday November 2.

My Preparation for Session 3

As an online student, your success in Session 3 also depends on your preparations.

I am about to enter my third Session 3.

Here are a few of my top tips:

Get Organised: Once you receive your subject outlines (often two weeks before the session starts), record all of the key dates into your calendar. With this period being shorter, and with Christmas it’s important to stay on top of your workload.

Create a Study Schedule:  Dedicate specific times for coursework, assessments, Zoom times, and any exam preparation. If you need a quiet place to study, Charles Sturt University campuses are open 24/7 with access via your student card.

Stay Connected:  Turn on that camera during Zoom sessions, and engage with fellow students through the discussion boards. Meet up in person or virtually for a coffee/chat. Studying online doesn’t mean studying alone.

Seek Support: Don’t hesitate to reach out to Charles Sturt Support Services for help when needed. They are there to assist you on your journey.

Plan for breaks: It is important to switch off and take a break from studying. Watch a movie, take a walk, or catch up with friends. I also choose to have a study-free day (usually Sunday) to re-set for the week.

A final note from Michelle

So, as you embark on this new learning adventure, remember to stay organised, plan your breaks wisely, and reach out for help when you need it.

Here’s to a successful and enjoyable Session 3!
