Beating the Winter Blues

Summary:

Winter… it’s gloomy and cold brrrr! Sure it’s not so bad when you’re cosy in bed watching tv but how are you meant to be productive? Brooke gives you her top tips to beat the winter blues and stay on track!

Written by Brooke Heather

We’re half-way through the Winter! Now, if you’re like me, you absolutely loved the Winter over your mid-year break because it meant you got to get toasty, binge a few shows, and just overall enjoy being warm in a cold time of year. Entering a new semester is always nerve-racking and exciting all at once but the second semester introduces a seasonal challenge known as the winter blues. It’s understandable – there’s lot of rain, you must layer up your clothes, it’s so hard to get out bed and downright cold. Personally, I fall victim to the winter blues every year SO this year I decided I wanted to flow with the seasons and to allow myself to appreciate the beauty of Winter rather than dread it. From me to you, I give you my top learned tips on how to not let Winter ruin your study jam:

Stay/Get Active

Staying active is easier said than done but in case you don’t know yet – Winter is the BEST time to construct a healthy exercise regime. What better way to get warm than to get active? Not only does it keep you out of the jumpers for a while but exercising of course releases endorphins and other brilliant substances in the body. This can be extremely beneficial when you’re struggling with motivation for university during Winter in particular. I highly recommend taking advantage of a hike or trail near you and making the most of our cooler months.

Create a Nice Environment

Having a warm and productive space to study is always critical, but even more important when overcoming Winter’s challenges. Here’s a few pointers on how to do this:

  • Have a heater and/or heated blanket in the space
  • Ensure there’s plenty of light (Winter = dark and sleepy vibes)
  • Have some vibrant or comforting decor to surround you

Eat Healthy

It’s soup season! There’s no better time to soak up all the delicious hot foods (think of soups again) than now. Cooking is a great way to relax but why not even make a few healthy eating goals to keep you thriving and nourishing your brain for the semester of study ahead! We even have a blog on a huge array of Winter recipes…

Winter Activities

Staying social and having fun is hard enough to keep up as students and Winter can seem to make it a little harder. Why not compose a list of activities you don’t enjoy in our crazy hot Aussie Summers that you want to do? Ideas below include:

  • Ice skating
  • Cozy dinner nights out
  • Hikes
  • Markets
  • Winter festivals
  • Mini-golf

I’m hoping that I’ve given you inspiration, at the least, to potentially consider how you can beat the blues this year. Everyone is different so remember to find your flow and know what works and what doesn’t when you’re aiming to source your motivation. You’ve got this!
