Starting university can be extremely nerve-racking as you embark on a journey of new faces, content and a completely altered routine. I understand this feeling all too well. When asked what a highlight was in my first year, I would simply answer having the opportunity to be a mentee and soon after a mentor.

As a new student I was given the utilities and confidence to overcome the first session “scaries” due to the Uni Foundations Program. This program centres around making your transition into university as smooth as possible while also giving you connections throughout.

As an online psychology student, I appreciate all the assistance offered to me and this program proceeds to give me everything I need.
Having people who don’t just hear about your obstacles but are often encountering them too is an amazing experience in its own. In my first week as a mentee my mentor welcomed the group and allowed me to familiarise myself with the program content.
In my ‘circle’ I was able to meet and interact with new or returning students studying all different degrees and of a variety of ages. Each week we’d discuss the struggles we were facing with our mentor and how we intended on overcoming them.
I left each session feeling like I had another tool in my kit. I was shown how to get started at university, academic skills, where to get help and the careers and skills hub.

As someone with a very busy schedule I was taught methods to incorporate university efficiently and ways to plan out my session.

I also found referencing quite challenging when I started university but thankfully the program showed me where to find academic skills and library resources to learn more about avoiding common errors in referencing.
Becoming a mentor has provided me with improved people skills and time management. As a mentor, I am given the ability to plan out how I will present the slides, create a fun space and ensure that I am supporting the circle in their individual university adventures.
I found that after my first time of leading a session I felt excited for the next week and thrived off being a helping hand for my peers. I personally believe this has been critical in sculpting my positive experiences within university and I feel I walk away with a sense of fulfilment each time I participate in this program.
Every single week gave me a new skill that I continue to use in my daily life. Throughout my entire experience so far, I have received immense support from the lovely Careers Team operating the program. Any question I have, no matter how big or how small is answered in a timely manner.

With Session 1 approaching soon, I urge you to join us in the Uni Foundations Program. There’s encouragement every step of the way for whether you’re signing up as a mentee or beginning your time as a mentor.
