Meet our Sustainability Student Advisers

Are you interested in how we, as students, can be more sustainable? Do you have some sustainability initiatives you would like to discuss?

Our 2022 Sustainability Student Advisers are here to help!

So why do we have Sustainability Student Advisers?

Charles Sturt’s Student Sustainability Advisers represent a really important part of Charles Sturt sustainability commitments. Afterall, one of the most  powerful ways that we can contribute to a more sustainable future is via the ripple effect that is created when our students become engaged and equipped with the skills to be instigators of positive change.

Our Sustainability Advisers will play a leadership role in delivering peer-to-peer engagement on environmental and social sustainability issues in a way that is fun, relevant and not at all intimidating.

So, let’s meet the team!

Meet Jessica Blaby

What are you studying?

Bachelor of Health and Medical Science

Why did you decide to become a Sustainability Student Adviser?

“I have been on a self-directed journey to become more sustainable as a student, in my personal life and in managing my family household. I am also a member of the Online SRC, as the Sustainability Officer, and through that platform, I share tips and thoughts on sustainable practices in fortnightly posts to the Online SRC Facebook page called “Sustainable Sunday”. I have absolutely loved this exploration of sustainability and the newfound consciousness I have around my way of life, so I really wanted to share that with others, and create more connections with distance students.”

What makes you passionate about sustainability?

“For me, it all started with two documentaries on Netflix; The Minimalists, and A Life on our Planet by David Attenborough. Both of these shows really made me stop and consider my lifestyle in a way that I had not previously done. I think everyone is now aware of the necessity of living in a way that allows for a peaceful and purposeful life and planet, but we don’t know how to go about making the changes necessary to do so. My aim is to just take baby steps in the right direction and hopefully share these with others.”

What can students come to you for?

“Students are welcome to contact me for ideas or tips on how to study sustainably, feedback or suggestions of what they would like to do or see take place, contact details of who the best person might be to approach for assistance with a specific problem or can really ask me anything and I’ll try to help!”

What do you enjoy doing outside of uni?

“I love going for a bike ride down the coast with my husband and two young children, and I play bass in a Fleetwood Mac tribute band based in my hometown of Adelaide.”

What are you studying?

Bachelor of Environmental Science and Management

Why did you decide to become a Sustainability Student Adviser?

“I decided to become a Sustainability Student Adviser so that I could apply the knowledge and skills that I’m learning in a role where I can support myself, students and the university to live in harmony with the unique environment of Australia.”

What makes you passionate about sustainability?

“What makes me passionate about sustainability is the environment. I love being out in nature and believe that effort applied towards protecting the environment from degradation and biodiversity loss is a cause that is well worth the hard work.”

What does your role as a Sustainability Student Advisor entail?

“My role as Sustainability Student Adviser consists of being the main contact for students regarding any sustainability initiatives or suggestions, they want to put forward to the uni or any advice if they are interested in decreasing their ecological footprint.”

What can students come to you for?

“Students can talk to me about getting involved in the sustainability projects on campus, joining The Port Enviro Club, and potential events that they’d like to see organised relating to sustainability. I’ll try my best to support anyone wishing to support the environment, or even if you wanna have a chat about stress related to the state of the environment, I’m a great listener!”

What is one easy way to be more sustainable?

“One easy way to be more sustainable is to use the REDcycle soft plastic collection points available at the major supermarkets (there’s one across the road at Coles!)”

“Being present on campus as someone to help answer questions and create more awareness around sustainability, with a strong focus on supporting students living in residence. We will also be delivering at least one sustainability-themed event in Session 2, so keep your eyes peeled!”

What makes you passionate about sustainability?

“What I love most about sustainability is that it encourages you to be more creative with everyday life and thinking. It’s a chance to think outside of the box and bears no limits. Another aspect is how it can bring communities together through a common interest that is so broad, there is something for everyone to be a part of. The collective effort of everyone involved is absolute key to achieving positive impacts.”

“I’m happy to answer any questions they have around sustainability and provide advice where possible. Even if I can’t directly help you, but can instead guide you to the right person/organisation for your query, that’s a win. Definitely available to just have a chat about anything sustainability related too, I’m always keen.”
