How to you plan to spend your uni break? Well you don’t just have to sit at home bingeing tv. Chloe tells you about her incredible trip to New Zealand and why you shouldn’t wait to take the leap (literally).

University life can often feel chaotic, especially juggling deadlines, exams, social events and work. However, it also offers so much flexibility and time to travel. I had always wanted to travel but thought that I would do it once I completed my degree – I am so glad I did not wait and decided to book a trip to New Zealand. Coming back, I am already looking at where to go next.

Over the past year I utilised my time, I worked throughout the uni year and saved up and I booked a trip to NZ during the summer holidays.

I booked my trip through Contiki – let me just say as a busy person who’s first time it was going overseas without my parents organising everything, Contiki was as simple as clicking add to cart. I had to purchase my own flights, extra accommodation, and travel insurance, but other than that everything was organised.

The trip manager would book all the add on activities, give you information about your whereabouts, answer any questions, and most importantly would come out with everybody and have a good night!

The trip I chose New Zealand Panorama explored both the North and the South Island and was just over 2 weeks. It was a perfect combination of adrenaline rushing activities, beautiful scenery, and good times.

Highlights of the Trip

There were so many activities and places I loved, but here are the standouts!

White water rafting in Rotorua: An incredible guided tour that was wild and so much fun, to top it off rafting down a 7-metre drop

Hiking Mt Tarrawarra Canyon: The views from this hike were amazing, looking out onto the lakes and going into the canyon was phenomenal

Shot over canyon swing: Doing this tandem was so fun, the adrenaline afterwards was rushing so it only made sense to do it again – it was AMAZING

Shot over Jet boat: Exploring the river doing 360’s with some areas up to only 10cm of water

Sunrise snorkel with dolphins: A must do! We saw hundreds of dolphins – not to be dramatic, we did see hundreds and they were so active, the sunrise topped it off.

Tawhai falls: This was one of my favourite places, it was so beautiful and worth jumping in in my clothes.

Lake Taupo: Crystal clear water, perfect for swimming.

Canyoning through waterfalls: From ziplining, to abseiling, to jumping off rocks into water, this was a pretty amazing experience.

One of my favourite things about my trip were the people I met. Making memories, exploring new things and having fun with a bunch of different people has created long lasting friendships from all over the world. I never thought I would find people I would click with so well – but I am so grateful I did.

If you’re thinking about traveling, do it! If you’re not, do it anyways. It is an amazing experience, and university is great time to do so.
