The holiday season doesn’t have to be costly. With a little creativity and resourcefulness, I’ve found that it can be easy to transform your room into a festive wonderland without overspending.

This year, instead of buying new decorations, I decided to have fun and get crafty with old decorations. If you’ve got old items lying around and you don’t want to spend more money on new decorations, give the old ones a fresh new look!

I had a box of ornaments from past years that looked a little worn down. Instead of tossing them, I repainted a few and even added glitter to one that had faded.

Transform regular household items into holiday décor:

  • I had some empty jars lying around so I filled some with fairy lights and any small ornaments. These created a nice festive glow to my room
  • If you own a lot of books, you can stack them into the shape of a Christmas tree – big or small (click here for inspo)
  • Repurpose yarn or string to create DIY garlands or hanging decorations (click here for inspo).

I’ve always loved having a wreath to hang up but they can be quite pricey. If you’re in need of a new wreath but don’t want to spend a lot of money on one, make your own! Collect branches, leaves, or flowers from outside, or use ribbon and string to craft a unique design. Add in fairy lights for a touch of sparkle, and your DIY wreath or garland will look like a store-bought piece! Click here for some DIY wreath ideas to get you started.

Fairy lights are the easiest and most affordable way to create a festive, cosy mood. I like to hang mine along shelves or anywhere that needs a bit of holiday glow. If you’re looking to grab some lights for cheap, there are plenty of budget-friendly stores or other retailers like Kmart.

Don’t just save wrapping paper for gifts! You can use it to cover books, line shelves, or even frame it as wall art. I also cut out snowflakes and stars to hang around my room. For inspiration, click here to see a list of ways to put to use all that leftover wrapping paper.

With these tips, you can bring the Christmas vibes to your room without spending a fortune on decorations. And you won’t be wasting any unused bits. By repurposing everyday items, DIYing wreaths and garlands, and using budget-friendly lighting, your room will be festive, cosy, and ready for the holidays. And the best part? It’s affordable, fun, and uniquely yours!
