Being a Sagittarius, adventure has always been a part of who I am. I love travelling, exploring new places, and experiencing things that I have never done before. Moving from Cambodia to Australia to study at Charles Sturt University was a big step, and living down in Port Macquarie is an opportunity for me to discover a new part of the world.
Port Macquarie is famous for its beautiful beaches, including Town Beach, Oxley Beach, Lighthouse Beach, and many others. Other tourist destinations, such as Port Central and Settlement City, draw a lot of locals and tourists. However, I have always preferred places that are quieter and less crowded. Therefore, these destinations are perfect for Charles Sturt students who want to take a break from study, discover hidden gems away from busy tourist spots, and spend quality time with friends:
- Kooloonbung Creek Nature Reserve
- Sea Acres Rainforest Centre
- Miners Beach
- Ellenborough Falls
- Billabong Zoo Koala & Wildlife Park
- Abundance Lifestyle & Garden
Kooloongbung Creek Nature Reserve:
Kooloongbung Creek Nature Reserve is one of my favourite places, located in the centre of Port Macquarie. At the entrance, there is a historic cemetery where many soldiers are buried. Some people may find it a little spooky, but there is nothing to be afraid of. Instead, it adds a sense of history to the area. The walking track takes visitors through wetlands, wooden boardwalks and small bridges. During the walk, you can see large colonies of flying foxes hanging from the trees. This place has both short and long walking routes, making it suitable for everyone. For me, it became a peaceful place for exercising, clearing my mind, and getting new ideas.

Sea Acres Rainforest Centre:
I highly recommend the Sea Acres Rainforest Centre, which is an ideal place for group outings with friends or classmates. This place features a long elevated boardwalk through one of the largest remaining coastal rainforests.

Walking through the rainforest feels like entering another world, surrounded by animals, tall trees, and sounds of nature. After the walk, visitors can reward themselves with a delicious meal or refreshing drink at the Rainforest Café, making it the perfect way to end the experience.

Miners Beach:
For those who enjoy discovering hidden gems, Miners Beach is a must-visit destination. Reaching the beach requires a walk through a bush trail, which makes the experience feel like an adventure.

When you arrive, you are rewarded with stunning ocean views and crystal-clear water. Compared to other beaches in Port Macquarie, Miners Beach is usually much quieter, making it ideal for relaxing and having a picnic with friends. Sometimes, after busy university weeks, visiting places like this help me recharge mentally.

Ellenborough Falls:
One of the most impressive natural attractions near Port Macquarie is Ellenborough Falls. Visitors can enjoy the falls from several viewpoints, but the most exciting experience is reaching the bottom. To do this, you must climb down 641 steps and then make the challenging journey back up. Although the walk requires effort, the breathtaking views and the sound of the powerful waterfall make it worthwhile. For me, the climb was not only a personal challenge and a great workout, but also a fun experience to share with friends. We even challenged each other to see who could complete the climb faster.

Billabong Zoo:
If you love animals, Billabong Zoo should definitely be on your list. My first time touching and feeding koalas was there, which made the experience unforgettable. I highly recommend that other international students visit the zoo to see the Australian wildlife up close, feel more connected to Australian culture, and create fun memories that can help ease homesickness while studying abroad.

Abundance Lifestyle & Garden:
Finally, Abundance Lifestyle & Garden offers a unique experience. This beautiful garden centre is filled with colourful flowers, unique plants, and peaceful outdoor spaces. It is more than just a place to shop for plants; it is a relaxing environment. Additionally, there is a café where you can enjoy coffee and food on the deck overlooking a tranquil lake teeming with birds, turtles, and surrounded by water dragons. For Charles Sturt students, this place is not only relaxing but also perfect for study groups, assignment discussions, team meetings, or catching up with friends after class.

Studying abroad is about more than just earning a degree; it is also about creating lifelong memories. These six places have made my journey as an international student in Port Macquarie much more meaningful. Whether you enjoy nature, wildlife, adventure, or simply relaxing, I believe these destinations are worth visiting at least once during your time in Port Macquarie.
