As a student representative with the SRC and Student Senate at Charles Sturt University, one of the most rewarding aspects of being involved in student leadership is having the opportunity to learn from others, participate in conversations about campus life, and work with fellow students to contribute to a positive campus community.
Recently, I had the opportunity to represent the Student Senate at the UniSport Australia National Conference in Melbourne.
The theme of this year’s conference was “Evolving university sport to create thriving campus communities”, bringing together staff, sporting organisations, and student leaders from universities across Australia to discuss the role of sport in fostering a vibrant and inclusive social culture on campus.
Attending the conference was a wonderful opportunity to learn from delegates from universities across Australia, as well as leaders in the university sport sector. Throughout the conference, speakers explored strategies to increase student engagement, strengthen connections across campuses, and emphasise the important role of student voices in shaping the future of university clubs and communities.
A highlight of the conference was connecting with other passionate student representatives and learning about their experiences in leadership. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to make these connections and was able to gain insights into how they contribute to a thriving campus at their university.
Through my time on the SRC and Student Senate, I have observed the positive impact that a social and vibrant campus culture can have on the university experience, enhancing student wellbeing, contributing to social connections, and creating a rewarding university experience.

If you are looking for a way to meet new people, represent your fellow students, and develop your skills in leadership, I recommend joining a campus club, your campus SRC, and the Student Senate – I have learnt so much from my peers. Being a member of the SRC is so rewarding and provides fantastic opportunities like this to learn from others, connect with students and contribute to campus life!
