Written by Ali Sproule.

Starting university can feel overwhelming at first. When I began my own studies, I had no idea that accepting my offer wasn’t the same as enrolling in subjects.

The good news? As both a student and a Student Central staff member, I’m here to share everything you need to know about enrolment. Let’s get started!

When to enrol?

The last day to add subjects without extra approvals is the Sunday at the end of the first week of the session. After that, you can still add subjects up until census date, but you’ll need formal approval and there’s no guarantee your request will be approved.

The last day to remove subjects is also census date for the session, after this you’ll remain academically and financially liable for the subject.

For key dates, visit here.

What sessions do I need to study?

Unless you take a Leave of Absence, it’s compulsory to study in sessions 1 and 2 each year.

Some courses also require session 3 enrolment. Even if enrolment isn’t compulsory, sometimes it can be helpful to study in session 3 to get ahead or catch-up.

Important: Students are not eligible for a Leave of Absence in their first session of study. If you are unable to commence study, you may be eligible to apply to defer. You can read information about deferral here.

How many subjects should I enrol in?

Standard full-time study load: Four 8-point subjects per session.

Standard part-time study load: Two 8-point subjects per session.

Note:

  • Some courses have non-standard study load requirements, so you need to check your Handbook to confirm your study load requirements.
  • You can study as little as 1 subject per session or more than 4 with approval from your Course Director, keeping in mind the maximum completion time and the requirements of any scholarships and loans that you may have.
  • International onshore students must maintain a full-time study load in every compulsory session. Where there are compassionate or compelling circumstances, students are able to request a reduced study load.

What subjects do I add?

  1. Visit the Graduate Planning System to view which subjects you have completed, are yet to complete, and if any of your subjects have prerequisites.
  2. Go to your Course Handbook for the year you commenced study.
  • You can view what subjects are core (compulsory) under the ‘Structure’ section in your Course Handbook.
  • If you wish to follow the recommended subject enrolment plan, refer to the ‘Enrolment Pattern’ section of your Course Handbook.
  • If you prefer to study subjects in sessions different from those in the suggested pattern, use the Subject Availability List to check when each subject is offered.
  • You can view which subjects require Intensive School or Workplace Learning using your online Course Brochure

Note: If you’re still unsure, you can email your course faculty for an individualised enrolment pattern.

How to add or delete subjects?

  1. Go to the Online Administration page
  2. Click ‘Add and remove subjects’
  • Select the session that you’re wanting to add/ delete a subject for.
  • If you’re wanting to delete a subject, click ‘Remove SUBJECT CODE’.
  • If you’re wanting to add a subject, select the correct Subject Code Prefix (the first 3 letters of your subject code).
  • Enter the Subject Number (the last 3 numbers of your subject code).
  • Click ‘Search’.
  • Select ‘Add subject’.

Note: If you want to enrol in a subject that has prerequisites and you believe that you have met these requirements, you can request a Waiver of Prerequisites on the Student Portal.

Remember

Enrolling in subjects isn’t as scary as it sounds. If you have any questions, remember that the friendly agents at Student Central are happy to guide you through the process.
