Kicking Goals On and Off the Field

Summary:

Sport isn’t just about getting exercise – it’s about forming a community. Tabitha tells you about her experience playing for the Charles Sturt Cockatoos Football Club and the upcoming Sports and Blues Awards!

Written by Tabitha Jones

When I first came to Charles Sturt University, I never imagined how big a part sport would be in my experience here, but I am certainly glad that I have been able to combine my love of football with my studies. As a med student with a busy schedule, I wasn’t sure I’d have time to join a team let alone being a founding member of the Charles Sturt Cockatoos Football Club. Football has quickly become the most rewarding and energising part of my uni journey.

Charles Sturt Cockatoos

In 2023, the Cockatoos were just getting off ground and I joined a group of other football lovers to help start a team and to have a kick around on campus, but it grew into something much bigger. I became a player, coach, and Club President. Since then, we’ve become one of the largest women’s football clubs in Orange, with over 40 registered players and two full women’s squads and in 2025 have been joined by a men’s team. But more than that, we’ve created a club with a culture that reflects Charles Sturt’s values: we’re inclusive, impactful, and above all, inspiring.

Two full squads – Pink and Yellow

We welcome everyone whether you’ve never played before, you’re returning after a break, or you’ve been playing for years. Students, alumni, high school girls, mums, daughters and now men all are part of the mix. One of the greatest personal highlights for me has been sharing the pitch with my daughters. It’s not something I ever thought I’d get to do while studying medicine and it’s been such a joy.

Cockatoos are a football club for everyone

What makes the Cockatoos truly special is the people behind the scenes. A huge shoutout needs to go to the student volunteers that run this club. Every game, training session, and community initiative is made possible by our members who give their time so generously. They run drills, wash uniforms, manage logistics, advocate for funding, and support one another without ever asking for recognition. That’s impact in action and a real reflection of Charles Sturt’s community spirit.

Supporting each other on and off the field

And let’s be honest we look good doing it! Our club takes pride in how we show up, on and off the field. With our custom-designed uniforms, clever social media, well organised matchdays, and a clear vision, we aim to be the most professional and welcoming club in the region. Whether you are brand new to sport or have been playing for years, when you step onto the field with the Cockatoos, you are part of something that’s more than just a team.

One of the highlights last year was making it to the grand final and winning the President’s Cup in a grand final rematch against our friends at Barnies. However, more meaningful highlights have been the friendships, the first goals, and the new players who never thought they’d play football until they gave it a go. That’s what university sport is all about, trying something new, finding your people, and discovering what you’re capable of.

Men’s team joined in 2025

The Charles Sturt 2025 Sports and Blues Award nominations are now open, it’s a great time to celebrate what sport at Charles Sturt is all about. Whilst these awards celebrate our high achieving and elite athletes, they shine a light on the clubs, teammates, volunteers, and leaders who make university sport more than just a game and let’s face it we couldn’t exist without it. Whether you’re nominating yourself, a teammate, or the club, I encourage you to get involved.

Personally, for me the Blues Awards hold real meaning and it was an absolute honour to receive one as a student at Charles Sturt in 2024. They recognise not just sporting success, but spirit, teamwork, and contribution. For me, that’s what sport at Charles Sturt has been about: showing up, making space for others, and building something that lasts, and it is our hope that this club lasts into the future to give students the same amazing chance that we have had to play football and be a real part of the Orange community.

If you’re a student at Charles Sturt, I encourage you to get involved in a club, whether it’s sport, arts, culture or community. Uni is the perfect time to not just study but to follow your passions, try something new, and find your people. For me, football has been more than a game. It’s been a connection, a huge mental health strategy because kicking a ball is an immediate stress release, and a reminder that we can achieve big things when we work together.

If you’ve had a memorable sporting moment this year or want to celebrate the achievements of someone who’s made a difference, nominate them for a Sports and Blues Award and let’s keep inspiring each other to live well, lead boldly, and make the most of our time at Charles Sturt University. Nominate here.
