OK – so your summer plans sounded a little like this:
- Catch up with friends
- Get a job
- Save money
- Get a summer body
- Work on your tan
- Catch up on TV shows
But sadly, they didn’t turn out like this. Instead, you’ve most likely spent your days sleeping in until lunch time and staying indoors avoiding the heat. But hey, at least you caught up on your fave TV show.
Before you knew it, summer break ended and it’s now time to do the uni thing all over again. The only thing getting you through this tough time is that all of your friends will be experiencing the same struggle. Here’s an expectation vs reality of your summer holidays.
Hang out with friends
Expectation
All of your old school friends flock back to your hometown over the Christmas break and you spend time together reminiscing about the ‘good old days’, whilst making new memories together.
Reality
Everyone is busy with full time work, their new family, or uni studies of their own. The only people from your hometown that you recognise are your family and that lady who works at the supermarket. But you’re happy to chat to her because she’s kind enough to ask how your studies are going.
Work
Expectation
You’ll snag a summer job in the first week of holidays, working in a boutique clothing store or organic cafe, and save every cent of your pay check.
Reality
You spend a month of your break searching for work, only to realise that all of the Christmas casual positions filled up about a month ago, and even your local McDonalds won’t hire you.
Spend time with family
Expectation
You’ll finally be reunited with all your extended family after a long year away, having lots of quality time with each and every one of them.
Reality
Your family are either busy with their own plans, working, holidaying or spending time with their other family, leaving just you and your siblings to argue out the holidays. Which reminds you how annoyed you get with them after spending a week together.
Get a summer body
Expectation
You work out every day, and stick to a clean eating plan. By the time uni starts your friends won’t even recognise you.
Reality
You eat yourself into a food coma over the Christmas holidays, because what else is Christmas for? You also attempt to work out once and somehow forget why you even started, also it’s really very hot outside #fitspo.
