I have always loved the idea of growing my own fruits and vegetables and starting my own garden. Starting a new hobby can be daunting because there’s so much to learn and everything is new.
I decided to start my gardening journey small with a trip to Bunnings to get some of the essentials:
- A greenhouse – to protect the plants from the eucalyptus tree in our backyard
- Garden pots
- Raised garden bed
- Soil and potting mix

and the exciting things
- Strawberry plant
- Blueberry plant
- Herbs – rosemary, lemon thyme and chives
- Heirloom tomato
We spent all day setting our garden up and fell in love with the tranquillity of planting and tending to the garden.

We continued to add to our garden, research and change our methods, make lots and LOTTTTTS of bunnings trips buying new plants and pots. We had some losses, RIP: borage, peas and celosia. But the wins, they were sweet… literally. Seeing the small flowers, begin to turn into baby fruits, to full size yummy fruits grown with 100% love, it was magical.

Who knew that such a simple new hobby would have such a positive effect. From starting with just a few pots to growing the garden, we quickly realised the pots and garden beds were nearly taking over the backyard and not looking that nice. So, you guessed it we went back to bunnings to try our hand at some landscaping.
Our shopping list, that occurred over multiple trips in the day …
- Weed mat
- Plant pot risers
- Pebbles
- Pavers
We spent all day doing hard labour, moving all our plants out of the garden, cleaning up all the leaves, moving the plants back trying to rearrange them in an aesthetic way, adding the pebbles and then admiring our work.

So, if you’re thinking of starting a new hobby, my biggest piece is to just start! It might be the best thing you do and become your favourite hobby.
