Electives: A Chance to Try Something New

Summary:

Need to choose your electives soon? Depending on your course, you may have the option to enrol in unrestricted electives, giving you the freedom to explore subjects from across the University, provided you meet the prerequisites. In this blog, Luke shares his experience of selecting and completing two very different electives, and the unexpected career paths opened up along the way.

Late last year I looked at the possible electives available for me to study as part of my Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology) at Charles Sturt University. Having received eight credit points from a Counselling Diploma in 2024, this meant I had to do a mere 16 subjects to complete my degree.

These 16 subjects comprised 14 core units and two electives. Last year I successfully completed two core subjects and an elective. I chose Health Psychology as my elective as it appealed to me ordinarily, but especially so, given I have a chronic autoimmune disease.

This left just one elective to choose which I understood I could place in my schedule whenever it suited me. I assumed I had to do something closely connected with psychology, but I have a theory in life that I always tap into: you don’t know the answer until you ask the question.

Browsing through the electives guide I stumbled on “Writing for Stage and Screen” under the Literature banner. “Could I do this?” I wondered. I asked the ever-helpful CSU Ask team and the answer was an exciting “Yes, you can!”

In finishing my three subjects last year my head had to be in an academic space. Through necessity, I had to structure the assessment work in a rigid fashion. The exact layout and reference specifics seemed to give me more stress than the content I had to write!

It was a baptism by fire.

As a part-time student, I opted to do just one subject this session. Writing for Stage and Screen has allowed me to use my creative brain and tilt me sideways to a potential new career path.

I’ll continue to chip away at my Bachelor Social Science (Psychology), but the writing for Stage and Screen subject has proven to be the perfect distraction before I get back into the meaty stuff in session two.

CSU has a great range of options available when it comes to studying electives. All you need to do is ask the question!

** Please note: this elective choice is based on my own experience and may not be appropriate for everyone. Ask the CSU Ask team!
