Choosing your degree should be stress free and something you can see yourself doing for a good chunk of your life. For me, Sports Media was that degree.
I grew up in a house where watching sports was something we did weekly. Whether it was our own teams playing, Australia representing us on theinternational stage, my family and I always tuned in; and from there, my love for sport grew and became a passion of mine.

Though I was never a sporty person, I always wanted to be involved with sports. When I was sixteen, that’s when I discovered Sports Media/Sports Reporting was a thing. I loved writing and I always loved the interviews by Danika Mason or Jake Duke for example, and I thought to myself “Can this be me one day?”.

I continuously watched interviews, The Late Show with Matty Johns, other media uploaded by sporting teams/athletes themselves. I realised I loved both the serious reporting and the more light-hearted media events. Combining this with my interests in travelling, I knew I wanted a career that involved all three aspects; that’s when I knew Sports Media was what I wanted to do.
When I realised Charles Sturt offered a Sports Media degree, it’s like all the stars aligned. In 2023, my last year of high school, I took the leap and applied for the course through the Advantage program.

When the results were released sometime later, I was sitting in my Ancient History class and logged into my email and was worried that I may of not been accepted. And to my surprise, with all my fellow classmates watching me, I got the Advantage. With tears in my eyes, I realised I now have the chance to do what I love.
Without Charles Sturt, my dream of working inside Sports Media would have never had the chance to bloom.
Currently I am in my third year of this degree, with 3 more years left. The thing I love about this degree is learning the history of sports that I love and learning the different methods in creating a piece of media, whether that is writing or interviewing. This degree has combined both my creative interests with my interest in learning more about the sports I wish to one day be a part of.
