Over the past seven weeks, I’ve had the privilege of joining an incredible team of Occupational Therapists in a paediatric setting.
From the very first day, I felt welcomed and supported, and I can honestly say I’ve learned more than I ever imagined in this short time. The team’s willingness to share their knowledge, answer my endless questions, and involve me in their work made this placement such a valuable experience.
Most of my placement was spent sitting in on one-on-one sessions with children, watching how each therapist adapted their approach to suit different personalities, abilities, and goals. I assisted wherever I could, helping set up activities, supporting children through tasks, and observing how sessions were structured to make therapy both effective and fun.

I also had the chance to watch initial assessments, measure bathrooms and home spaces for potential modifications, and even observe car modifications to meet family needs.
Beyond one-on-one therapy, I joined group sessions aimed at developing social skills, observed fine motor assessments, and scored sensory profiles that helped guide intervention planning. One of my highlights was contributing to social stories designed to help children better understand their unique situations. it reminded me how creative and individualised paediatric OT can be.

Throughout this placement, I’ve learned how important early intervention is in shaping a child’s future opportunities. I’ve also discovered just how powerful the therapeutic use of self can be. I enjoyed developing my toolbox of skills such as learning to use my tone, my energy & silliness to engage or regulate kids. I’m leaving this placement feeling incredibly grateful not only for the practical skills I’ve gained, but also for the confidence, tips, and insights I’ll carry into my future career. Most of all, it has confirmed how much I’d love to work in the paediatric setting one day, helping children and their families achieve the big and little milestones.
