There’s something so exhilarating about finding a one-of-a-kind piece buried in the racks of a charity shop – a pre-loved gem waiting for a new story. That’s exactly the spirit behind Thrift Society, a new student-run club I started this year on Charles Sturts Orange campus.
My vision was simple: create a space for students who love fashion, sustainability, and second-hand shopping to connect, share, and express themselves. Whether you’re into vintage jackets, retro dresses, funky prints, or just want to freshen up your wardrobe without breaking the bank, Thrift Society is for you.

To kick things off, I hosted our very first Thrift Market Pop-Up in the courtyard outside the library with six racks of clothing from my own closet, curated from my travels across Asia, Europe and Australia. Tunes were playing, and the warm Orange sun was shining down while students dropped by between classes or during study breaks to browse, chat, and picked up pieces that caught their eye. I was so excited seeing that word spread quickly when friends told friends. Before long, we had a lively, colourful crowd hanging out, shopping, and enjoying the atmosphere.

It felt like the whole event was more than just a market. It was a moment of pause during the chaos of exam prep, a chance to slow down, have fun, and connect with other students over something as simple and joyful as finding new fits.

One of the most encouraging parts was that so many students, girls and guys alike, expressed interest in joining the club and running their own stalls at the next event. There’s clearly a hunger for creative, student-driven spaces like this and I’m beyond excited to see how the Thrift Society grows.

If this sounds like something you’d love to be part of, the good news is that you can start your own Thrift Society on your campus too! For me the process was really straightforward. I contacted my Student Representative Committee and got the ball rolling. I gathered a few of my friends who were excited about the idea and we had our “annual general meeting” casually over a dinner, and just like that things were officially a club. So whether you’re passionate about fashion, sustainability, or creating spaces where students can connect and unwind, Thrift Society is the perfect way to bring your campus community together.
