Written by Olivia Baker

Have you ever felt pressurised by society and various influencing platforms to pursue a degree following your high school journey in order to obtain a dream career path? Unfortunately, I did.  Due to experiencing bullying in high school, my degree pathway from the “get-go” was a little challenging to allow my degree vision to come to life.

Nevertheless, with persistence and mighty resilience, I applied myself wholeheartedly allowing my degree vision to fall into place, because from my early academic schooling years, I always knew that I wanted to complete a degree to allow me the opportunity by securing nothing but the best for my career.

Many years later, I am very grateful that I applied myself to pursue a Master degree in Fraud and Financial Crime at Charles Sturt University, as the learnings I have accomplished have complimented my career harmoniously and as a result, the opportunities I have received in return have been immeasurable.

I have loved every moment of pursuing my degree of choice. The learnings have been extraordinary, the knowledge absorbed from assignments have been everlasting and overall, my thought process has been enhanced. My confidence has been moulded to uplift my career in ways I could never imagine, including overseas travel opportunities, great relationships established with Charles Sturt educators, networking with industry professionals worldwide, and being invited to speak at conferences pertaining to money laundering and fraud in line with my current role and long-term career path.

Rest assured, I have encountered great moments of stress and anxiety when I needed to complete an assignment throughout my degree journey. However, I have always remained focused, reflecting on where my journey started from. By applying this methodology in knowing that there is light at the end of the tunnel, my resilience threshold has catapulted into a realm of boundless strength which I am extremely thankful for pursuing my degree of choice.

To anyone else who is contemplating pursuing a degree, please consider this option. I wouldn’t have my life any other way because you are not only enhancing your knowledge, but you are investing in yourself to be the best possible version of you in both academics and your career, as we only have one opportunity in life, and truly there is no better return than investing in yourself – give it a go and don’t look back!
