Graduation is one of the most exciting milestones in your university experience, and it can be daunting trying to figure out what to wear for this special occasion. But don’t worry because I’m here to help you navigate the dress-code! As someone who has graduated from a previous degree, I understand how tricky it can be to find the perfect outfit! Finding the right outfit can make you feel confident and can really add a special touch to your graduation day, so let’s talk about what to wear, what not to wear, and things to keep in mind as you prepare for this milestone!

What to Wear

  1. Semi-formal attire: Graduation ceremonies typically have a dress-code of semi-formal or business casual. For women, this can be a semi-formal dress, skirt or tailored pants, and a blouse. For men, this is usually a dress shirt, business trousers, and dress shoes. A blazer or suit jacket is generally optional and don’t forget you will be wearing your academic gown. If you haven’t seen one before, they are open at the front so wearing a tie is recommended.
  2. Accessories: It’s all about the accessories! Adding some subtle accessories such as a nice belt, watch or tasteful jewellery can add a polished touch to your outfit.
  3. A personal touch: It is important to let your personality shine through, this is your big day! It is also common for graduates to wear traditional dress or something special to honour their family or culture.

What Not to Wear

  1. Casual or informal attire: Graduation is a formal event and a momentous achievement for all involved and it is important to respect the occasion and the other graduates. Graduates should avoid wearing casual clothing such as jeans, t-shirts or sneakers/casual sandals.
  2. Overly revealing outfits: Aim to wear attire that is respectful and appropriate for the formal setting and keep in mind that you are in a professional setting.

Things to Keep in Mind

  1. The weather! It’s helpful to have a few options or layers depending on what time of year you are graduating. Keep in mind you will be wearing an academic gown over your outfit, and you don’t want to be too hot with the extra layer.
  2. Hair: Graduates will be wearing a graduation cap for the ceremony (this is called a trencher cap), which is important to consider when styling your hair for the event. For people with longer hair, it is best to avoid elaborate up-do’s or high ponytails.
  3. Comfort is key: You will be in your outfit for several hours so it is important to choose an outfit that is professional whilst still allowing you to be comfortable sitting, walking, and standing. This is especially important for shoes; be aware that you will likely need to be able to climb at least a few stairs on either side of the stage if you plan to wear heels.
  4. Colour schemes: For postgraduates and undergraduates, your academic gown will be black, but the colour of your hood or ‘stole’ will be dictated by which school you are graduating from so it can be a good idea to check this before picking your outfit to avoid colour clashes!  View the Academic Dress page for more information about the dress colours for your faculty and qualification on the day.

Graduation day is a huge achievement and a special day to celebrate all your hard work. I hope this guide helps you to look and feel your best as you step into your future, happy graduation!
