Going to university is an exciting adventure full of new experiences and opportunities to learn and grow both academically and personally. However, balancing university commitments and making time for social and/or work activities can be overwhelming. Keeping organised while being productive can be challenging.

Your study desk is more than just a place to study. I like to see my study desk as a personal command centre. A study desk can make or break your study session. Below is a list of ten must-have desk items every first-year university student needs to thrive.

1—Desk caddy: a compact organiser for pens, highlighters, scissors, calculator, sticky notes, sticky tape, stapler, and anything else I randomly need within arm’s reach.

2—Laptop/Tablet and accessories: Your study device is your academic lifeline, so add a wireless mouse, portable keyboard, and a stand to improve posture.

Look after your laptop with accessories

3— Whiteboard and whiteboard markers: I love to dump information on whiteboards for active recall, and I wish I had bought one in my first year of university!!

4—Reusable water bottles, coffee mugs, and other drinks: I like to have three drinks. I know it is a lot, but hear me out. One drink is caffeinated, one for hydration, and the final for something to indulge in.

5—Noise-cancelling or comfortable headphones: These are extremely useful for buffering out the random noises you can hear while studying, but remember that you should be able to hear fire alarms and other emergency sounds.

6—Proper lighting: I have this desk lamp that produces really bright white light, which helps me stay awake while studying.

Proper lighting makes all the difference

7—Power extension cords or boards: Power extension cords or boards are often limited and help you save time charging multiple devices simultaneously.

8—Personalise your desk: Add a plant, photo frame, fairy lighting, or even aspects of a home for a slight touch to boost your mood. I have a religious corner on my table, so there is something for everyone.

9—Snacks drawer: I like to snack on foods while studying, so I keep protein bars, popcorn bags and pre-cut fruits and place them in the fridge for a quick grab-and-go snack.

10—Mini Fan, desk heater or blanket: I overheat easily in the summer and get shivering cold quickly in the winter. If this is you, get something to help you manage the temperature while studying.

Staying cool, calm and collected

These ten must-have items can and will help you make a desk your command centre. This is important as you can brainstorm ideas, tackle assignments and plan for the future. These essentials will help you create a space for organisation, productivity, and motivation, which are all vital for a first-year university student.

Just remember that it is not about having the picture-perfect setup but a setup that works for you. It must meet your needs, and so adaption is critical. With the right tools, you’ll be ready to tackle university.
