As the days get colder most of us living in CSU campus cities (with the exception of Port Macquarie) can often be seen scraping the ice off the car windscreen in the wee hours of the morning.
We have all been there, and for those of us who don’t have a garage we are there almost every day.
So, how do you fix this problem? You can’t keep using “my car windows were frozen” as your excuse for being late and there is only so much ice scraping your poor little fingers can take.
Here are few things that could rectify the situation, and the best part is THEY’RE CHEAP!
5 frozen windscreen hacks…
- The old towel trick – chances are you know about this one. Find an old towel or something along those lines and place it over your windscreen, this creates a barrier between the frost and the glass so all you have to do is peel off the towel in the morning and your window should be clear! TIP: use a long beach towel so you can tuck it in the windows and doors on windy nights!
- Vinegar spray – Mix 3 parts vinegar and 1 part water together in a spray bottle and spray it over your windscreen the night before. Vinegar and ice are not friends and so the vinegar will dissolve the frost. TIP: if you forget to do it the night before, it should still work if you spray it on top of the ice and scrape away.
- Did someone say onion? Yep! Grab a raw onion, cut it in half and rub it all over your windscreen/windows the night before. The chemicals in the onion stop the ice from sticking. TIP: to avoid onion hands, wear gloves!
- Alcohol trick – if you do not have any of these things, chances are as a uni student you probably have some alcohol lying around! Use this as a substitute for vinegar and it should work a treat! TIP: unfortunately I don’t think this applies to goon…
- If the card has been dealt – if for some reason you have failed to prepare the night before and you do wake up with a frozen windscreen, take an old card out of your wallet and use it to scrape the ice off. It works just as well as the ice scrapers they sell at the shops! TIP: whatever you do, do not poor hot water over the screen, many people believe this is the way to go however the jump in temperatures can cause damage to the screen and lead to the glass cracking.
So there you have it! I hope one of these five tips work out for you! Remember always wait for the ice to defrost before travelling and never drive without full vision.
