My Journey Into Law

Summary:

The path to uni isn’t the same for everyone – but if you have a dream there is no doubt you can make it! A Charlie contributor shares how they started working in the legal field and are now working towards their Bachelor of Laws at Charles Sturt.

When I was 17, I told my classmates that one day I wanted to become a prosecutor and earn a law degree. Most people laughed. It felt like such an impossible dream at the time, something too ambitious and maybe even unrealistic. But deep down, I knew it was where I was meant to be.

Fast forward to today, and that once distant dream has become my reality. I am about to embark on my Bachelor of Laws degree with Charles Sturt University, while already working in the legal field as a State Prosecutor since last year. It still feels surreal to say that out loud, to stand in the courtroom by day and soon take my place in the classroom by night.

My path here hasn’t been a straight line. I didn’t go directly from school to university. Instead, I built my way into the profession step by step. Working in the justice system before formally studying it has been an incredible privilege, allowing me to see the law not just as theory, but as something that shapes lives every single day.

Serving as a prosecutor has been both challenging and deeply rewarding. Each matter presents its own lessons from hearings that sharpen your mind, moments that test your resolve, and outcomes that remind you why fairness and integrity are at the heart of justice. It is a role that demands strength, composure, and compassion, and I feel honoured to contribute, even in a small way, to the pursuit of justice.

Now, as I prepare to step into the classroom, I see it as an opportunity to strengthen the foundations I have already begun to build in practice. Studying law while working within it will bring unique challenges, but also immense growth. I know there will be long nights and steep learning curves, yet every lecture, every case study, and every reflection will bring me closer to the lawyer and person that I aspire to become.

To anyone who has ever been told their dream was too ambitious, well let my story  be your motivation. Keep showing up, keep learning, and keep believing in what drives you. The distance between where you are and where you want to be is closed by persistence and purpose.
