It’s exam period and you may be starting to have a look at your timetables to know just when you’ll be out of action. As everyone knows, exams are a particularly exhausting period, and it’s important to look out for each other! During this time, you need to make a conscious effort to be a considerate housemate.
There are heaps of little things that you can do for your roommate during your exams which will go a long way!
- Cooking an extra serve of food
This one is a personal favourite of mine. Cooking is my love language, so I am basically always making sure that there’s an extra portion for my roomie!

I have some staple meals during exams that are super yummy, and keep my roommate fed too. I tend to make a big pan of bacon and eggs or a bulk stir fry and portion them, ready for my friend. Cooking can also be a nice moment for you and your roommate to have some quality, non-study time, while eating healthy food.

2. Notes and Thoughts!
Another favourite of mine is leaving friendly notes and a little gift (like a chocolate!) for my roomie to find when I know she’s got an exam. If I forget to write a note, I’ll send her message wishing her good luck or something to make her laugh. A bit of hype is always what people need!
3. Communicating with each other
So often, we forget to simply communicate with our roommates, and we live with them! I recommend that you exchange exam timetables and discuss how you’re feeling about certain exams. They might have an exam they’re feeling super nervous about and want extra peace and quiet to study for it.
4. Helping with studying and checking-in
Flashcards! It’s one of the best ways to study and it’s a little fun. Ask your roommate if they need a hand and maybe you can assist them in acing their exams. Another way that you can help your roommate is by checking-in during exams. When your roomie has a hard exam coming up, maybe they would like some study tips or help!

Being a nice roommate, particularly during exams, is truly appreciated.
Exams can cause us to be quite isolated, and I like to look at our roomies as our built-in bestie.

Whenever you need a little rest & relaxation, help to study or a food buddy, your roomie is there! Being there for them will only strengthen your friendship, so why not give these tips a crack?
