Dorm Life is the Best Life!

Summary:

Not sure whether moving onto campus is the right call for you? Imogen fills you in on why living in a dorm is the best choice you can make as a student!

Written by Imogen Hope

Hi there! My name is Imogen and I’m a 2nd year paramedicine student at Charles Sturt in Port Macquarie. I am originally from the country town of Orange NSW, and I made the nerve racking 8 hour drive to move to pursue my dream career here to Port in February 2024.

I chose Paramedicine for its exciting, fast paced, medical aspects with my driving inspiration being the loss of a dear friend back in 2021. I wanted to ensure I provide a legacy of compassion and gold star care mixing my life with a little adrenaline rush and what better choice than being a paramedic? Being a paramedic is so much more than clinical care in dire situations, it’s about being who you would want to show up at your door on your worst day and say “hey I’ve got you.”

I am currently a resident leader and student ambassador here on campus meaning I run the dorm that I live in and provide things such as campus tours, open days + much more to current and future students and let me tell you….Dorm life is the best life!

Move in day, boxes packed, bright starry eyed and terrified, your resident leader welcomes you at your new home and takes you to your room, where your journey will begin. It’s not every day you end up living and sharing your space with 10-16 people per floor and I wouldn’t have it any other way, you’re all in this together.

Orientation week is filled with meeting new friends, attending information sessions, orientation events such as the boat cruise, parties at the beach house/The Port macquarie hotel/Finnians irish tavern, beach games and hanging out in your dorm. The first few weeks of uni are spent wrapping your head around your course, learning how to be away from home and solidifying why you came to Port.

Living on campus gives you a free social life, on campus events, orientation week, living with your best friends, dorm activities and events, social sport, fundraising events, Res shield, Res parties, Res balls, you name it – we’ve got it.

The friends I met in the first couple of weeks of uni, who I lived with on campus, are now my life long friends, and I couldn’t imagine spending my time here and graduating alongside anyone else.

ResLife creates an atmosphere where you never feel alone. The opportunities I have been given as a student and as a Resident Leader to meet new people and create forever lasting friendships in my home away from home are incredible, and I’m so grateful for the scared, shy and unsure Imogen that took a leap of faith in 2024 to move to Charles Sturt Port Macquarie.
