Studying at university means getting a job of your choosing in an industry you’re passionate about, right?
Textbooks and multi-storey buildings may lead to that.
Although, there a few steps you can take which can guarantee you’ll get the most out of your time at university. That all starts with getting hands on.
When I started at university, I was drained from working jobs that supported me financially but would play no role in my career progression. I heard about ‘Earn As You Learn’ when I was looking to get a job in my industry, but how could I without a degree under my belt? The one-day career workshop taught us all the skills necessary to take that step. As it turns out, if you sell yourself well enough, you can achieve anything.
Resumes, cover letters and job interviews may seem scary now but they don’t have to be. The tools the workshop taught us actually made it exciting to share these things because they’re tailored to sell your passions and skills as best as possible.
The best part is it doesn’t have to be a one-off workshop. I know that when I apply for a job I can sit down with someone to help me update and re-write my application documents to suit the job description.
A few weeks after attending I secured a paid journalism job working as a news writer at a radio station! And I’m not alone. My friend Laura felt the exact same way. She was sick and tired of hospitality work. Laura wanted to get into healthcare work as soon as possible.
“After learning what I did at the workshop I was successful in securing employment with a non-for-profit disability and support organisation,” Laura said.
Laura met her employee through a networking event Earn As You Learn organised. We’ll be attending these types of events in future so it was a great opportunity to get thrown in the deep end at a time when you can afford to make mistakes.
Both of us now love going to work because it supports our studies and makes assignments easier to get through … the money is just a bonus.
We also still receive support from the team. It’s a tool that you’d be silly not to use. I wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t attended.
My big career dreams now seem that one bit closer because the workshop has provided me with skills that make me look and feel like a professional.
Earn As You Learn Workshops are running in Port Macquarie, Wagga Wagga and Bathurst Campuses.
