Keep Australia Beautiful Week is coming soon! This year, it’s all about making a difference in our oceans and reducing marine litter. Litter has become a problem in the oceans and most is unseen, so this year’s events give you a chance to clean up the litter and help the lives of countless birds and fish.
When is it? Monday 20 August to Sunday 26 August.
What can I do? By attending an organised event or doing a clean-up yourself , you can have a huge impact on the amount of litter that ends up in our waterways and it doesn’t take much time.
What if I don’t live near the ocean? A large amount of litter that is dropped anywhere in Australia finds its way out to sea, so doing your bit to clean up your local area you will help prevent the mass of rubbish that ends up there yearly.
Did you know?
- Approximately 10 million tonnes of litter end up in the world’s oceans and seas each year.
- It is estimated that 70% of marine litter is on the seabed, 15% is floating in the water column and 15% is what we find on our shores.
- Marine litter consists of a wide range of materials including plastic, metal, wood, rubber, glass and paper. However, it is dominated by plastic which accounts for 80% of the items found on our beaches.
