2016 was an election year for the USA, and the controversy over the presidential candidates in the lead up to the election was huge. On Election Day, we saw Donald Trump win, and in January 2017 he was sworn in as President of the United States of America. Due to the close relationships between the USA and Australia, this was huge in 2016 (and now) which meant it was all over social media.
- Pokémon Go was released
Pokémon Go swept the globe. When released, it was downloaded by just about everybody, and was a great tool for bringing friends, family, and strangers together to enjoy a game while encouraging physical activity. Pokémon Go was an instant hit, and though it isn’t a phenomenon in 2017, it was a craze to remember in 2016.
- Carrie Fisher died
2016 saw the death of a few celebrities, with people reeling from the loss of childhood icons. But one death that hit us hard was the death of Carrie Fisher. Carrie Fisher was known for her role as Princess Leia in the Star Wars series, and also played a huge role as an advocate for mental health.
- NASA’s Spacecraft Juno reached its destination
After a five year journey beginning in 2011, the NASA spacecraft Juno finally reached its destination and arrived at Jupiter in July 2016. A seriously huge accomplishment for space travel.
In June 2016, a referendum was held in the United Kingdom to determine whether or not the UK would leave the European Union. This decision was commonly referred to as #brexit. When the vote was cast, the decision was made by the British people to leave the European Union, which had huge implications on financial trade, travel, and immigration between the UK and the rest of Europe.
- Leo finally won his Oscar
2016 was the year that the Leo DiCaprio could finally put all of the memes to rest. There has been a long running joke about the number of movies that DiCaprio has been in, plus his undeniable acting ability, and the fact that he had never won an Oscar for any of these roles. Being the subject of many memes, this opportunity for internet sensationalism came to an end in 2016 when DiCaprio won an Oscar for his performance in The Renevant.
