Ways to celebrate Australia Day

Australia Day is one of the most celebrated public holidays of the year. It’s a day when most take time away from work and study to celebrate all of the great things about Australia. On this day we’re usually spoilt for choice when deciding how to enjoy the day. Here’s a few ways that you’ll find Aussies spending their time on 26 January.

Aussie BBQ

A backyard bbq is a popular way to celebrate Australia Day. It incorporates all of the iconic aspects of the Australian culture – the bbq, pavlova, and a healthy dose of backyard cricket. An added bonus of an Aussie bbq is gathering all of your favourite people together to share the day in one place, battling the mozzies as a team. This well-respected tradition has been around for decades, and as the good old Aussie saying goes, ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!’

Triple J Hottest 100 Countdown

For the music lovers, Australia Day is host to one of the most important musical events of the year – the Triple J Hottest 100 Countdown. On this day (that music fans spend the whole year waiting for), we’re left holding our breath until we hear that number one hit. The countdown kicks off at lunch-time, and plays on through until late evening. One of the best things about the countdown is that you can enjoy it while lounging by the pool, or at a party with your friends if you feel like socialising.

Community events

As Australia Day is a national holiday, there are loads of community events scheduled – no matter where you live. To find out about events close to you, try visiting your nearest tourist information centre or local council. Even easier – jump online and search.

Pool party

Make a splash on Australia Day and host a pool party. It’s the perfect way to enjoy the day while escaping the heat of summer. Don’t forget to ‘Slip, Slop, Slap!’ to avoid turning out like a roasted tomato on 27 January.

Outback Australia

What could be more fitting for Australia Day then heading into the bush and connecting with your inner Crocodile Dundee?  Go camping with friends, tackle a hike on a famous Australian trail, or spend time fishing, swimming, or kayaking in one of Australia’s beautiful rivers. Spending time with nature will remind you how great this country actually is.
