PR students showcase skills at wine show

Each year, two final year Public Relations (PR) students from CSU are given the opportunity to look after the media public relations for the National Cool Climate Wine Show (NCCWS) in Bathurst. The NCCWS is a well-known premier inland wine show in NSW, receiving more than 800 wine entries last year. Who knew there could be this much wine in one place, at one time?

Asha Jairath and Molly Galvin, both study a Bachelor of Communication (Public Relations) and were selected to help out at this year’s event as a part of their final major projects as they near the end of their degrees.

Students work closely with the client to ensure all relevant media outlets are contacted to generate as much publicity as possible. This year Asha and Molly had the opportunity to work with WIN news, local newspapers, radio stations and local businesses in Bathurst.

We caught up with Asha and she told us about the amazing opportunity she has been given.

What have you learnt so far?

“I’ve learnt how to best communicate with relevant media outlets from a PR perspective, which may sound like a minor task, however the way in which you communicate with media outlets from a PR perspective determines whether they’ll show interest in your story not.

“Most importantly I’ve learnt valuable skills in how to best coordinate a major project like the NCCWS.”

What has been the major highlight of the project?

“Our fantastic client has given us her trust and lots of freedom which has allowed us to learn so much and take initiative in our jobs, which is a pretty unique opportunity that we’ve been given as uni students.

“Also learning about the wine growing community nation-wide has been really interesting, as an avid wine lover myself. In moderation of course!”

How has it benefited your study?

“I’ve gained the skills needed to take into the workplace, and it has given me a lot of confidence in my communication abilities. It’s also been really valuable to be able to use the skills I’ve learnt over the past couple of years at uni in a professional environment.

“The National Cool Climate Wine Show is held from October 25-29 for all of the wine lovers out there.”
