Have you ever received an email that looked a bit dodgy instructing you to open an attachment, or gone to a website that you aren’t quite sure about that wants you to click a link for more information or go to the next step?
Sounding familiar? Unfortunately it’s highly likely that you’ve been the target of an online attack and someone out there is trying to scam you to hack your data or steal your personal information (this includes your CSU account information).
If a scammer steals your personal details, they can assume your identity and steal more information about you e.g. social media or banking details, especially if you use the same email address and/or password across multiple web services.
To help keep yourself safe – try the following:
- Use strong security questions and passwords. Think back – do you remember setting up a CSU security question? If you can’t remember, check and make sure it is something that only you know, and
- Be on the lookout for anything that looks suspicious. It’s always important to follow your hunch and take a closer look at things if you aren’t sure – for example: hover over a link to show the URL it’s going to take you to or do a web search on an organisation to make sure they are who they say they are.
Remember before you click – think twice. If something doesn’t seem right in an email or webpage and you think it’s a scam – it probably is.
