Largest-ever personal bequest means more scholarships

$3.5 million bequest by Carole and Stan Droder, $3 million donation by Charles Sturt University. These donations will allow $360,000 each year for student scholarships. 36 students will attend university each year who would otherwise not have been able to. Nearly 200 more graduates every five years who will have secured qualifications and can embark on careers they once thought impossible.

In an act of overwhelming generosity, CSU has been bequeathed more than $3 million by the late Carole and Stan Droder. CSU will use the money to fund scholarships for on campus, undergraduate students in perpetuity.

While Carole and Stan were unable to attend university themselves, they became passionate advocates for higher education and were especially focused on giving students from regional areas the change to go to university.

Inspired by the Droders’ donation, CSU has committed another $3 million itself to the CSU Foundation, bringing the total amount available to be invested for scholarships to more than $6 million.

This means that from 2017, around $360,000 extra will be available each year for CSU student scholarships. Scholarship recipients will be able to use the funds for course fees, accommodation costs or study expenses such as textbooks and equipment.

And this is in addition to the Carole and Stan Droder Scholarships that are being awarded to at least one continuing undergraduate student on each CSU campus at scholarship ceremonies this month.

Starting in 2017, new Carole and Stan Droder Scholarships will be available to continuing undergraduate students studying an course on campus at Albury-Wodonga, Bathurst, Dubbo, Orange, Port Macquarie or Wagga Wagga.

Further new scholarships to commence in 2017 funded by CSU’s $3 million investment include:

  • Charles Sturt University Foundation Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Vivacity Scholarships
  • Charles Sturt University Foundation Work Placement Scholarships
  • Charles Sturt University Foundation Refugee Persistence Scholarships
  • Charles Sturt University Foundation Gumption Scholarships

Applications for 2017 scholarships will open in November 2016.
